Baggu by Caitlin Mociun

Sadly, probably the last thing I need in my life is a new bag (or bags for that matter), but I really dig these new bags by Brooklyn-based designer Caitlin Mociun for Baggu.   From $10-$14.  Shop here.

And in other bag news, I think this one deserves a post at Honestly WTF: a $290 lunch bag by Rachel Comey (available at Opening Ceremony).  Cute but really?

(new series) made in brooklyn etsy: sweet fine day + whimsy and spice

I’m starting a new series featuring Brooklyn-based artists and artisans on Etsy.  I love Etsy but easily get overwhelmed by the sheer number of stores on their site, so hopefully this will help you (and me) learn more about arts and crafts produced right here in BK.  I’ll try and post something new each Tuesday.

First up:  SWEET FINE DAY + WHIMSY AND SPICE … a double feature

Sweet Fine Day features photography and prints by Jenna Park who writes a photography blog by the same name.  Her and her husband, Mark Sopchak also run a confectionery business based in Brooklyn called Whimsy & Spice.  You can find their cookies and candies (check out the cardamom marshmallows!) on Etsy too.  Check them out!

Whimsy & Spice: Massaman Curry Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies

Whimsy & Spice: Chocolate Butterscotch Bars

Sweet Fine Day: Kitchen Conversions Blue, 8 x 10 print

Sweet Fine Day: Oyster Mushroom Series no1, 4 Fine Art Prints

Sweet Fine Day: Prospect Park Snow Storm, 8x10 Fine Art Print

I’m especially appreciating this last photograph on this sweltering day…

brownstoner: top ten hardware stores in brooklyn

Another top-1o list.  This one far more useful.  Here’s Brownstoner’s list of the top hardware stores in BK:

The results are in from our thoroughly unscientific poll to determine the most popular mom-and-pop hardware stores in Brooklyn. (To be fair, given the reader demographic, it would be fairer to say “in Brownstone and North Brooklyn.”) So without further ado, click through to see the list in the order of popularity based on a total of 654 responses.

1. Mazzone’s True Value, 470 Court Street
2. Tony’s Hardware, 181 Smith Street
3. Leopoldi’s True Value, 415 5th Avenue
4. Pintchik, 478 Bergen Street
5. Tarzian Hardware, 194 7th Avenue
6. Sister’s Community Hardware, 900 Fulton Street
7. Crest True Value, 558 Metropolitan Avenue
8. Almac Hardware, 2 Newkirk Plaza
9. R&A Hardware, 109 5th Avenue
10. (tied) Greschler’s, 660 5th Avenue
Big Brothers Hardware, 1327 Fulton
